Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition, a review a walk through the Disney Kingdoms

The review of Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition, an adventure in the company of Mickey Mouse and his friends, designed for young children.

Have you ever been to Disneyland? If the answer is yes, you will know very well that, even before the rides, it is the magic, the so-called “air you breathe”, that is the main attraction of these theme parks. Those who grew up with Disney animated movies – and it is impossible that any human being in the Western world has not seen at least one of them in the span of his existence – there feel transported to a real animated film. Bandai Namco has kept this potential in mind and you’ll understand this when you read our review of Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition.

Hold on: some of you may remember this name, Disney Magical World. By now it’s almost a franchise, with the first chapter debuting exclusively on Nintendo 3DS in 2014 and the sequel, Disney Magical World 2, following it in 2016. Especially the second of the two did not arouse particular attention at the time. Hence, perhaps, the desire to take it back by weight and carry it on Nintendo Switch, saving on the development costs (and the search for new ideas) of a hypothetical Disney Magical World 3. On balance, then, Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition for Nintendo Switch is the revised and partially improved version of the same game already appeared almost seven years ago on Nintendo 3DS, with the addition of all DLC published later. A nice full-bodied package, addressed and directly designed for children.

Living with Mickey Mouse and company

In Disney Magical World 2 you can play with Miis

Bandai Namco’s idea was very clever: to take the philosophy of Animal Crossing and transport it into the Disney world, with a few additions in cinematic sauce and a general simplification of all the mechanics developed over the years by Nintendo. Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition, when all is said and done, is this: a life simulator for children, to be played calmly, quietly and without stress, in a world where more anonymous avatars are accompanied by the most famous Disney faces in the world. Your neighbor, for example, is Mickey Mouse, but just a few steps away you’ll find Donald Duck’s boat, Donald Duck’s fashion boutique, Minnie’s house, Scrooge McDuck’s department store, and a thousand other activities.

The basic objective of the experience is to leave space for the player and surprise him continuously, with a series of events based on the films of Disney animated movies. A bit like Kingdom Hearts, but clearly with different ambitions, Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition allows you to venture into the most diverse worlds: the Hundred Acre Wood of Winnie The Poo, the impossible kingdoms of Alice in Wonderland, the ocean of the Little Mermaid, Captain Hook’s boat, and we’re just mentioning the most famous and predictable. There are, in fact, even more interesting appearances: Jack Skeletron from Nightmare Before Christmas, the beaches of Lilo & Stitch, Ralph and Vanellope from Ralph Crack, and we do not even want to anticipate too much to those who did not have a chance to play Disney Magical World 2 on Nintendo 3DS.

Gameplay: a thousand possibilities

Castellopolis dominates the main hub of Disney Magical World 2

Although this is a product designed for children, and – but here we already have reservations – for Disney fans on the edge of insanity, Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition offers a very rich and varied gameplay. Mind you: rich does not necessarily mean deep. It is true that you’ll be able to fish, spend time as you wish, explore Castellopoli in all its buildings and events, take care of the garden, decorate the house, enrich your clothing and change it constantly, buy new items at the stalls, collect, and a thousand other things. But it is also true that we are far from the attention to detail and sophistication of any Stardew Valley, The Sims or the aforementioned Animal Crossing. Which is not even a problem, because Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition has never wanted to keep up with them, it is simply good to keep in mind.

Progression is one of the most interesting aspects of the production. There is no storyline: Mickey Mouse has simply invited you, via a talking letter, to live in the kingdom of Castellopolis, in the company of the Disney gang. However, each character will almost immediately begin to offer you a series of activities, very simple tasks that you can complete effortlessly, at your leisure. Every single action, from putting on an outfit to going to give Scrooge a hand, rewards the player with a sticker. The more stickers you have in your possession, the more places you can visit, and the more activities you can access. So, if at the beginning of your adventure you notice that a laboratory is not accessible because it requires something like 40 stickers, don’t worry: you’ll have them in your scrapbook in no time. You’ll simply have to take advantage of every opportunity proposed by the title.

There is no shortage of flaws. If the basic non-existent difficulty can not be counted among them, certainly annoys a graphics not always treated. Nothing to say about the models of Disney characters, finished and well cared for: but in many other aspects Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition can not hide its genesis for Nintendo 3DS and its age, which has now exceeded six years. Try to take a look at the meadow behind the protagonist’s house and you’ll notice textures that are anything but appealing; overall, however, the resolution has been increased, since Nintendo Switch, unlike the Nintendo 3DS, can afford at least high definition.

Among the more positive notes, however, we note the recovery of the camera: almost at any time, even during dialogues and cutscenes, you can press the command L to activate the camera, and then shoot with R without interrupting the adventure. The images are saved in the internal memory of Nintendo Switch, or if you want on the SD card.

Comment

Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition could be the perfect Christmas gift for your children and, if it’s too late for Christmas, you can easily recycle it for the next useful occasion. The important thing is to love Disney worlds and characters, because the absentees, in this case, are really counted on the tips of your fingers. Of course, you must also like the genre: do not expect an unforgettable adventure, or a well-kept plot, or even a gameplay too in-depth. Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition focuses on variety and surprise, rather than depth. But you’ll find plenty of activities to choose from: take care of your new home, accumulate and wear clothes, enrich your garden, visit your friends (the Disney characters) and carry out small errands for them, attend events and festivals, and much more. Get ready, in short, to be continually amazed. After all, this is what Disney has always done.
