Just Dance 2022, step by step review

The Just Dance 2022 review is now an annual appointment you can’t miss, which brings little news, but a lot of fun

You understand that another year has passed when on store shelves (or in pandemic time on the digital ones) you find the new chapter of the rhythm game by Ubisoft designed for those who want to dance in the company. Since this is the review of Just Dance 2022 of course you have guessed the reference: how long until Christmas? Less than two months, right? And Christmas brings with it New Year, the Epiphany, a lot of parties and opportunities to get together in company (here’s the rhyme).

For the writer and presumably not only for him, Just Dance is a constant presence during the holidays, useful to warm up before the most excited celebrations and at the same time to digest and dispose of the lavish lunches. Moving on to the new appointment specifically, it is legitimate to wonder what has changed with Just Dance 2022 compared to Just Dance 2021, 2020, 2019… in short, from ten years ago. Little and nothing, but so much you already imagined and we bet that – rightly – you do not even care so much.

Content (and subscription)

This year Just Dance 2022 is very choreographic

It’s true that every year we keep asking ourselves: why doesn’t Ubisoft renew the game formula? And every 365 days the answer that everyone gives is always the same: why should it, since it works very well and sells so many copies every year? So the contents of Just Dance 2022 are perfectly in line with those of past editions. If anything, something about accessibility has been revised or modified.

More intuitive than ever, for example, is the startup: a nice central option that says “Just Dance. Dance to the tracks you love with friends and family!”. It’s clearer than that; then immediately on the left there’s the Kids mode for the little ones, with songs carefully prepared for them, but also suitable for adults who are less picky, and then again on the right the Quick Play, with which you can start dancing immediately without even touching the main menus.

This year Just Dance 2022 proposes, as a base, 40 unreleased tracks, with due variations related to the difficulty levels that will be unlocked later (dancing and reballing the songs present). These titles are obviously only a small part of the enormous potential of the brand, the problem is that – as always – all other tracks (hundreds and hundreds) are linked to the Just Dance Unlimited subscription (a month’s subscription costs 3.99 euros, three months 9.99 euros, and finally the entire year is offered at 24.99 euros). Not even that much, but it is the mechanics that are annoying, especially when the game in question reminds you, almost at the end of each dance, that you can unlock all this goodness by paying separately. Not even “free” smartphone apps are so invasive.

All songs

In Just Dance 2022 there is a special guest...

If last year the songs chosen by Ubisoft convinced only in part, this year the selection went much better. Obviously this is a matter of personal taste, but all the songs are more or less recent and inviting. We report them below because often it is precisely this offer to convince the buyer, or to make him desist. In Just Dance 2022 you will find the following:

  • À la Folie (Julien Granel & Lena Situations)
  • Baiana (Bakermat)
  • Believer (Imagine Dragons)

  • Think About Things (Daði Freyr)
  • You Can Dance (Chilly Gonzales)
  • You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) (Sylvester)

From many of the names mentioned you should have understood that, at least for this year, there seems to be little to complain about, qualitatively speaking and also from the point of view of variety.

Gameplay and a welcome novelty

Playing with friends on Just Dance 2022 is more fun than ever

Nintendo Switch is usually the best platform to enjoy Just Dance 2022, by virtue of the controllers present: the gameplay requires you to hold a single Joy-Con and imitate, as is known, all the movements performed on screen in the various choreographies. On other consoles (but also on Nintendo Switch itself) you can then connect your smartphone equipped with Just Dance App, but with the Joy Con is much more intuitive, immediate and natural. Nothing has been changed regarding the game modes: the more the player is able to imitate the dancers, the higher the score at the end of the song (and therefore also the credits obtained, which are used to unlock skins, themes and even new variants for the songs).

There’s a welcome new feature that deserves a separate mention: the greater care given to on-screen videos. Aside from the fact that even the simple choreography with the “silhouettes” of the dancers to imitate now show more detail in the background and a better quality overall, Ubisoft has introduced real music videos in three dimensions to accompany certain songs (not all).

The quality of these videos, which closely resemble those in computer graphics that accompany the release of new hits in the music world, is significant, as well as appreciating that touch somewhere between dreamlike and surreal that accompanies the settings and protagonists. It is true, on the other hand, that imitating the movements of the character who moves on the screen is a bit ‘more complex than the usual two-dimensional men. But for once in many years that something new is proposed, you really accept everything.

Just Dance 2022 is one of those games that comment a bit on itself. The public already has well in mind what it offers and in what contexts it can “come in handy”. The video game critics, in this case, can, if anything, offer some insights: to remember that on Nintendo Switch the fruition of the chapter is probably the best and the most sensible; to point the finger at the well-known mechanism of the subscription, which has never been completely convincing but which, unfortunately, works from a commercial point of view; to value the partly improved accessibility and, above all, the new 3D videos that accompany some of the tracks present; to appreciate the choice of songs for this last annual appointment. Of course, not everyone will be willing to spend the beauty of sixty euros for all this, preferring to wait for a discreet discount.

  • Artistically appreciable 3D videos
  • Funny as ever
  • Excellent choices in the 40 songs of this edition
  • The subscription always remains a bitter pill
  • Very good, but not perfect movement reading
  • Songs aside, very similar to the previous edition
